How do you recommend that people break out of the hobbyist stage and into the big business?
이제 아마추어 수준에서 큰 비지니스로 입문하는 사람들에게 하고 싶은 얘기가 있나요?


CLA:
There’s only one way to get in the business, I believe.
제가 믿기로는 한가지 방법밖에는 없는 것 같다.

Find the nearest recording studio that has somebody cool in it,
가까운 녹음실중에 좋은 엔지니어를 찾아서

and beg, beg, beg to make the guy behind the board coffee.
그리고 빌고, 빌고, 빌어서 커피 심부름을 해라

Beg to clean the toilet,
빌어서 화장실 청소를 시작해라

beg to work there.
빌어서 거기서 일을 시작해라

Be a fly on the wall, be in the room with the guys who make hits like Bob Clearmountain, or Tom Lord-Alge.
벽에 파리가 되어서라도 히트를 믹스하는 밥 클리어 마운틴 이나 톰 로드 알지 같은 사람들과 같은 방에 있어라

Be in the room with Andy Wallace.
엔디 월레스와 같은 방에 있어라

Do whatever you can do to get in the room.
모든 방법을 동원해서라도 그 방에 들어가라

Take note of everything they do,
그들이 하는 모든것을 기록하라

and find a way that you can do it for yourself.
그리고 니가 그렇게 할 수 있는 방법을 찾아라

And do it better.
그리고 점 점 좋아져라

Learn the techniques of the vanishing art of recording from the guys that really know how to do it.
정말 어떻게 하는지 아는 사람들로부터 연기처럼 없어져 버리는 예술적인 녹음의 기술들을 배워라

When you are starting out you are in the prime time to absorb, to discipline yourself.
이것을 흡수하기 위해서 항상 최상의 콘디션으로 유지하도록 자신을 훈련하라

If you’re a slob, it’s not going to work for you.
만약 당신이 게으르다면 당신에게는 맞지 않는 일이다

Be ready to work 15 or 16 hours a day.
하루에 15시간이나 16시간을 일할수도 있다

Make friends,
친구를 만들어라

and do it all for nothing.
아무것도 기대 하지말고 일을 해줘라

Get up off your ass and put down the bong;
엉덩짝을 떼어 일어나라 그리고 담배대를 내려놔라
*(bong: 원래 뜻은 마리화나용 물담배를 지칭함)

get your hands out of your pants and head to the studio.
주머니에서 손을 빼고 녹음실로 가라

I was 12 years old when my mom took me to the studio
내가 12살때 엄마가 나를 녹음실로 데려갔다

and I wanted to be there every single day.
그리고 난 매일 매일 그 곳에 있고 싶었다

That’s the love for it.
그것이 내 열정(애정)이었다

All the stuff you need to learn,
당신이 배워할 모든 것들

you really need to learn while you’re young.
당신이 젊을때 (한살이라도) 당신이 꼭 배워야 할것을 배워라

Listen to the music — don’t just look at it.
음악을 들어라, 그냥 쳐다 보지만 말고!!!

Nobody cares what the impedance is;
아무도 임피던스가 어떻게 되는지는 신경쓰지 않는다

all they care about is
그들(클라이언트 혹은 아티스트)이 신경쓰는 것은

when you can walk into the room,
당신이 녹음실로 들어왔을때

set up a mic,
마이크를 설치하고

turn the knobs,
노브들을 돌리고

hit record,
녹음을 시작하면

and make everybody go “wow.”
그들에 입에서 ‘우와~!!’하는 소리가 나오게 만드는 것이다
